Choosing between a 3 ply and a 5 ply corrugated box is mostly about weight, fragility and how far the parcel travels. Pick a box that is too weak and products get crushed in transit. Pick one that is too strong for the job and you pay more for packaging and shipping weight than you need to. This guide explains the difference in plain terms and helps you choose the right box for your shipments.
What does “ply” mean in a corrugated box?
Ply is the number of paper layers in the board. A 3 ply board has one wavy (fluted) layer between two flat sheets. This is called single wall. A 5 ply board has two fluted layers and three flat sheets. This is called double wall. The extra layers make a 5 ply box much stiffer and better at taking pressure from stacking and rough handling.
3 ply vs 5 ply at a glance
| 3 ply box | 5 ply box | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Single wall | Double wall |
| Strength | Good for light and medium items | Built for heavy, fragile and bulky items |
| Weight of the box | Lighter, which keeps courier charges lower | Heavier and more rigid |
| Typical use | E-commerce orders, clothing, cosmetics, books, small electronics | House shifting, appliances, glassware, bulk and export cartons |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
When a 3 ply box is enough
- The packed parcel is light, roughly under 5 kg.
- The product is not very fragile, or it is already in its own retail box.
- You ship everyday e-commerce orders by courier and want to keep volumetric and actual weight low.
We stock 23 sizes of 3 ply brown carton boxes, from small 3.5 inch cubes to 12 inch long cartons. See all sizes in 3 ply corrugated boxes.
When you need a 5 ply box
- The contents are heavy, such as kitchenware, tools, books in bulk or small appliances.
- The items are fragile, such as glass, ceramics or decor, and need a rigid outer box.
- Boxes will be stacked in a truck or warehouse, or travel long distances.
- You are moving house. Large 5 ply cartons are the usual choice for house shifting because they hold their shape when full and stacked.
Our 5 ply range covers 12 sizes, including large cartons for shifting such as 18×12×12, 20×10×11, 27×13×14, 28×16×17 and 30×19×18 inch. See 5 ply corrugated boxes.
What about mailer boxes?
Mailer (flap) boxes are also 3 ply, but they are die-cut to fold and lock without tape and look neater when the customer opens them. They suit small D2C products like cosmetics, jewellery and gift sets. Our mailer box sizes guide lists every size we stock.
Tips to protect what is inside
- Choose the smallest box that fits the product with a little room for cushioning. Empty space lets items move and break.
- Fill gaps with bubble wrap, honeycomb paper or shredded paper.
- Seal the top and bottom seams with good BOPP packing tape, and use an H-pattern for heavy boxes.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 5 ply box always better?
Not always. It is stronger, but it is heavier and costs more. For light everyday parcels a 3 ply box does the job and keeps shipping costs down.
Which box is best for house shifting?
Large 5 ply boxes, because they stay rigid when packed full and stacked in a truck.
Are the boxes delivered flat?
Yes. Boxes are supplied flat-packed and folded into shape before use. Delivery is free across India and every order comes with a GST invoice.
