Stretch wrap film is the clear, clingy plastic used to hold cartons together, protect furniture and keep goods clean and secure during shifting and storage. It sticks to itself without glue, so it is quick to use and leaves no residue. This guide explains which width to choose and how to wrap properly.
What is stretch wrap film used for?
- Bundling several cartons together so they travel as one load.
- Wrapping furniture, mattresses and luggage during house shifting to keep out dust and protect against scratches.
- Securing pallet loads in warehouses and transport.
- Bundling small items such as cables, pipes, handles and parcels.
Which width should you choose?
| Width | Best for |
|---|---|
| 4 inch | Bundling small items, cables, handles and small parcels |
| 6 inch | Small bundles and light hand wrapping |
| 12 inch | Cartons, luggage and medium furniture |
| 18 inch | Furniture, mattresses and stacked cartons |
| 24 inch | Large furniture and pallet loads, covering more area per turn |
Narrow rolls are easier to handle for small jobs. Wider rolls cover big items faster with fewer turns. All five widths are available in stretch wrap film rolls.
How to use stretch wrap
- Tuck the loose end under the first turn, or press it onto the item, so the film starts to cling.
- Pull the film gently as you wrap. Stretching it a little makes it grip tighter.
- Overlap each turn by about half the film width.
- Add extra turns at the top and bottom of a stack, where loads usually shift.
- Tear or cut the film and press the end flat. It clings to itself and stays in place.
Stretch film for house shifting
For moving house, wrap sofas, mattresses and wooden furniture in stretch film first to keep out dust and moisture, then add bubble wrap or corrugated paper rolls on corners and glass. Pack loose items in strong 5 ply boxes, which hold their shape when stacked in a truck.
Frequently asked questions
Is stretch wrap the same as kitchen cling film?
They look similar, but packing stretch film is made for wrapping goods and loads. It comes in wider rolls and is stronger for transport and storage.
Does stretch film leave marks on furniture?
It sticks to itself, not to the surface, so it peels off cleanly. Avoid leaving it on wooden furniture in direct sun for long periods.
