Bubble wrap is sold by GSM, and picking the right grade makes a real difference. Too light and fragile items crack in transit. Too heavy and you pay for protection you do not need. This guide explains what GSM means for bubble wrap and which grade to choose for common products.
What does GSM mean in bubble wrap?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It tells you how much plastic film is used in one square metre of bubble wrap. A higher GSM means thicker film and sturdier bubbles that resist bursting under pressure. A lower GSM roll is lighter and cheaper, and is fine for items that only need a soft layer of protection.
Which GSM should you choose?
| Grade | Protection level | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 30 GSM | Light | Basic e-commerce parcels and items that are not very fragile |
| 40 GSM | Standard | Everyday courier parcels, gifts and boxed products |
| 50 GSM | Strong | Glassware, cosmetics and small electronics |
| 60 GSM | Heavy duty | Fragile electronics, decor and glass products |
| 80 GSM | Extra strong | Electronics, fragile decor and high-value shipments |
| 120 GSM | Industrial | Industrial parts, heavy electronics and the most fragile items |
A simple rule: the heavier and more fragile the item, the higher the GSM. If a product will travel a long distance or be handled many times, go one grade up.
Roll sizes
All our bubble wrap rolls are 1 metre (about 39 inch) wide and transparent. You can choose a length of 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 metres in every grade, so small sellers can start with a short roll and warehouses can buy long rolls for daily packing. See all grades in bubble wrap rolls.
How to wrap an item properly
- Wrap the product with the bubble side facing inwards, so the bubbles touch the item and absorb knocks.
- Use two or three layers for glass, ceramics and screens, and cover corners and edges well.
- Tape the wrap closed so it does not unroll inside the box.
- Place the wrapped item in a box that leaves a little space on every side, and fill any gaps so nothing moves.

Bubble wrap or a plastic-free option?
If you prefer to avoid plastic, honeycomb paper wrap opens into a 3D paper cushion that grips the product, and corrugated paper rolls work well for wrapping frames, furniture edges and larger items.
Frequently asked questions
Is higher GSM always better?
No. Higher GSM gives more protection but costs more. For light items a 30 or 40 GSM roll does the job.
Which GSM is best for e-commerce?
Most sellers use 40 or 50 GSM for everyday parcels and keep a heavier grade for glass and electronics.
